SimplStor® Classic

SimplStor Classic: Affordable Alternative to Proprietary Lock-In

We introduced SimplStor over 15 years ago to give our NetApp™ customers an affordable alternative to buying new proprietary storage systems. Built without any proprietary hardware and using the OS and file system which best suits the customer’s requirements, SimplStor sales have grown rapidly.

Since its introduction, Linux and XFS have been a popular choice for SimplStor builds. However, Linux isn't for everyone, so we introduced a Windows Server build and then another for the ZFS Filesystem, which can offer many of the features NetApp provides like snapshots, replication and data recovery. SimplStor Classic comes in two models: SSC-36 (X14), which offers up to 36 data drives, and SSC-12 (X14), which accommodates up to 12 data drives.

  • Base Configuration - The Intel X14 motherboard is at the heart of SimplStor Classic. It features Intel Xeon 6700/6500 series processors with P-cores for great performance, stability and reliability. It accepts Up to 2TB of DDR5 6400MT/s RDIMMs. And there are two 10GbE RJ45 ports onboard, with plenty of slots for more NICs or other PCIe adapters.
  • Capacity – SimplStor Classic systems typically scale from 100TB to multiple petabytes depending on the customer’s requirements. The modular design of SimplStor Classic makes future expansion easy with add-on arrays.
  • RAID or HBA – For reliability, most customers select RAID 6 for their production systems, to gain the advantages from dual parity drives. BA options are also available. One of our Storage Architects will help you choose the best RAID or HBA configuration for your SimplStor deployment.
  • Drives – Depending on your workflow demands and budget, SimplStor Classic can be built with SATA, SAS or SSDs for data drives. OS drives are on two mirrored SSDs in the two back slots, leaving more slots open for data drives. Additionally, there are two M.2 slots for read cache or other needs.
  • SimplSupport Tools – SimplStats runs in the background, keeping track of system functionality from a hardware perspective, sending notifications and log files if an anomaly occurs.
  • ZHA Exception Reporter (ER): Our custom-designed ER receives the notifications and logs from the servers and analyzes them. A trouble-ticket is opened and both the customer and our engineering team are notified.
